Yestermorrow Design/Build School

Yestermorrow is a non-profit design/build school that was founded in 1980.  It was started to create a school for architects and builders to work together and share knowledge on how to design buildings and communities better.  This is a hands on school teaching students to create using a sense of design knowledge and craftsmanship.  There are classes of every kind offered from design, to lecture, homesteading, and build your own beehive.  I participated in the 3 week Sustainable Design Build Intensive, Basics of Timber Framing, Living Home: Living Building Challenge and Biomimicry: Applying Life's Principles in Sustainable Design.

Waitsfield Residential Project

On week three of the design/build course intensive, students were to design a house inspired by permaculture prinicples. This home was designed around the separation between private and public and the simplicity of intimacy behind a dinner party.  While the center of the home is the kitchen, levels and sight lines divide and intertwine all at the same time this space. This is uniquely design by me for me.  This project grew my passion for residential design.  It grew my understanding of what a home truely is and how design can impact you emotions.  This entire project is hand drafted.

Timber Framing

This was a 6 day class on traditional timber framing.  During this class students learned traditional hand-cut joinery and tools.  We learned the fundamentals of designing and constructing a mortise and tenon timber frame structure.  The days were spent in the wood shop using hand saws, axes and chisels, while the nights were spent in lecture learning the history, traditions and different techniques of timber framing.  While I do not see myself becoming a future timber framing, I felt this class was important to learn different building techniques so that I can understand the larger image of design and what is happening during all aspects from construction to finishing design.
